2009-10 Professional Grant recipients announced
The College of Letters & Science is pleased to announce that 13 individuals received a 2009-2010 College of Letters & Science Professional Development Grant.
The College makes $5,000 per fiscal year available to fund meaningful professional development opportunities for L&S classified staff.
The program is in response to a concern that some classified staff members do not have funding available to them to attend training and professional development opportunities, particularly employees in small departments and those in technical and blue collar positions.
Please congratulate the following individuals:
- Corinne Ahrens, School of Journalism & Mass Communication
- Sara Yaeger, Department of Physics
- Susan Fenton, Religious Studies
- Symphorien Fossi, Integrated Liberal Studies
- Kristi Heming, Department of Chemistry
- Sunshine Jansen, Department of Geography

- Janice Lucchesi, Student Academic Affairs
- Amy Phillips, Department of History
- Amber Reierson, Department of Geography
- Catherine Richardson, Department of Computer Science

Washburn Observatory rededication a great success
On September 11, 2009, the College officially rededicated the Washburn Observatory.
We could not have asked for a more beautiful day. I want to thank all of the architects, construction workers, contractors and the many others at the university, the state and with Isthmus Architecture that made this renovation a true and complete success.
I also want to thank our speakers at the ceremony: Jim Lattis, Bob Mathieu and Chuck Snowdon.
Lastly, but certain not the least, I want to again thank our donors - San Orr and the Nancy Woodson Spire Foundation and Steve Skolaski at the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation. Without their leadership and support, this project would not be possible.
I look forward to the Wednesday night telescope viewings which are back on schedule and to seeing the building in spectacular use by the L&S Honors Program. Please be sure to see our photos from the event.

Dean's News: Paul DeLuca, Jr. named new provost
Chancellor Martin named Paul DeLuca Jr. the university's provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs on June 11, 2009.
Paul hails from the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) where he served as vice dean and associate dean for research and graduate studies. Although he has been in the SMPH for many years, he has a strong liberal arts background leading to a Ph.D. in Physics.
I worked with Paul on a number of campus-wide initiatives and issues over the years and have found him to be very knowledgeable about the challenges and opportunities facing the university.
