| March 19, 20: 'What is a German Department?' at UW |
"What is a German Department?" — the 12th annual Graduate Student Conference of the German and Dutch Graduate Student Association —
will take place on March 19 and 20, 2010.
The two day conference will be hosted at the Pyle Center and will feature a variety of scholars and experts.
This year's keynote speaker is Claire Kramsch (University of California, Berkeley), "Language departments as privileged sites for the study of meaning."

| Max Kade Institute to host int'l conference, student workshop on transnationalism |
On March 25-26, the Max Kade Institute in collaboration with the University of Leeds/UK will host an international conference: Representing and Experiencing Transnationalism: Germanic Languages and Cultures in Global Perspective.
The event is supported by the World Universities Network Fund for International Research Collaborations. All parts of the program will be held at the Memorial Union.
The conference is preceded by a special workshop for UW graduate students on March 24 at 4pm at the Memorial Union. All graduate students are invited to attend.
The capstone event is a public lecture by Jane Wilkinson and Kristine Horner (both from the University of Leeds) on Shifting Borders in a Changing Europe on March 25, to be held from 6:00 - 7:30pm at the Memorial Union.
This lecture will explore the construction of nation-state borderland areas as ‘European’ spaces, focusing on two geographical case studies of ‘old’ and ‘new’ European Union borderlands: 1) the Luxembourg town Schengen, bordering on German and France, and 2) the towns of Görlitz (Germany) and Zgorzelec (Poland).

| Max Kade Institute Celebrated 25th Anniversary in April |
The Institute also celebrated its 25th anniversary with a banquet and international conference April 1-3. The distinguished banquet guest and speaker was Ambassador Dr. Klaus Scharioth of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Emeritus Professor Jost Hermand also gave a keynote
address.

| "Language Matters for Wisconsin" gets boost from WI Idea Endowment Grant |
The Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies received an Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment Grant for the project "Language Matters for Wisconsin."
Professors Thomas Purnell
(Linguistics) and Eric Raimy (English), together with Joe Salmons
(Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures),
will work with community partners across Wisconsin to hold public
forums addressing local and regional language-related issues and
concerns.
