Area StudiesUpcoming Conference: "50th Year Anniversary of the Tragedy of American Diplomacy"

This year's "William Appleman Williams Conference: 50th Year Anniversary of The Tragedy of American Diplomacy" will feature a number of lectures and talks on October 9, 2009.

Speakers include Professor Jeremi Suri, William Appleman Williiams and keynote speaker Staughton Lynd, an activist, historian and attorney.

Lynd's keynote talk, "William Appleman Williams, Empire and International Law" will begin at 4pm at Grainger Hall.

The daylong conference is sponsored by the European Union Center of Excellence.

Area StudiesEUCE invites two WI high school teachers participate in educational trip abroad

The Delegation of the European Commission to the U.S. organized its first annual educational trip to Brussels, Belgium on June 20-25, 2009.

The UW-Madison European Union Center of Excellence participated in this outstanding educational opportunity by inviting two Wisconsin high school teachers to travel to Brussels.

William Gibson of Madison’s East High School and Brigitte Musallam of Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids joined a group of about 25 secondary school teachers and university students from across the U.S. for the week long program. 

The program included two days of briefings at the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, a day of briefings at NATO Headquarters and the U.S. Mission to the EU, as well as a day trip to The College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

Humanities & the ArtsSuri discusses CIA, investigation of torture abuses on WPR

Jeremi Suri, E. Gordon Fox Professor of History and Director of the European Union Center of Excellence, was a guest on "At Issue with Ben Merens" on Wisconsin Public Radio August 25th. 

Suri and Glen Moberg (in for Ben Merens) talked about the CIA and the investigation of alleged CIA interrogation abuse.  The full show is available online.

Jeremi Suri, E. Gordon Fox Professor of History and Director of the European Union Center for Excellence, appeared on "At Issue with Ben Merens" on Wisconsin Public Radio August 5th.

Suri and Merens discussed North Korea, Bill Clinton's recent trip, nuclear proliferation, and the future of East Asian security.

Area StudiesSuri talks US/China relations with Ben Merens on WPR

Professor Jeremi Suri, E. Gordon Fox Professor of History and Director of the European Union Center for Excellence, was a guest on "At Issue with Ben Merens" July 27th.

Suri and Merens discussed US/China relations, a follow-up to President Obama's recent meeting with Chiense leaders in Washington where talks focused on the global economy and North Korea.

The newly debuted innovative online course - "History of US Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy"- was recently featured in the Associated Press: "UW-Madison makes an unlikely ally: the military." 

The dynamic course - taught by Professor Jeremi Suri, E. Gordon Fox Professor of History and Director of the European Union Center of Excellence - is open to UW students as well as military officers serving abroad.

Humanities & the Arts"Grand Strategy" course debuts online, enrolls 25 full-time military officers

An innovative online course - "History of US Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy"- began on June 15.  Open to undergraduates, the course is also a unique opportunity for military officers serving abroad.

There are currently 31 "special students" enrolled, including 25 full-time military officers, a number of whom are taking the course while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Thanks to generous support from donors, 18 of these officers will not have to pay tuition out-of-pocket.
