AckermanThe NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal.

Professor Steve Ackerman (Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences) was in Washington D.C., on May 11 to receive the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal.

The medal is "awarded to any individual who was not a Government employee during the period in which the service was performed. The award is given for exceptional contributions to NASA's mission."

Ackerman is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and is Director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS).

Ackerman and his colleague Professor Jonathan Martin are also well-known in the community as the "Ask the Weather Guys" in the Wisconsin State Journal and regular guests on WHA Radio (970 AM) the last Monday of each month at 11:45am.

Professor Zhengyu Liu

Zhengyu Liu, a professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences and environmental studies, was recently named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union.

Liu was selected for his pioneering work on decadal oceanic and climate variability and the interactions between the atmosphere, ocean and biosphere in past and future climate changes.

Election as a Fellow of AGU is a recognition for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions. Fellows must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. 

Liu is also the director of the Center for Climatic Research of the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.
