Area StudiesEUCE invites two WI high school teachers participate in educational trip abroad

The Delegation of the European Commission to the U.S. organized its first annual educational trip to Brussels, Belgium on June 20-25, 2009.

The UW-Madison European Union Center of Excellence participated in this outstanding educational opportunity by inviting two Wisconsin high school teachers to travel to Brussels.

William Gibson of Madison’s East High School and Brigitte Musallam of Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids joined a group of about 25 secondary school teachers and university students from across the U.S. for the week long program.

The program included two days of briefings at the European Commission and the Council of Ministers, a day of briefings at NATO Headquarters and the U.S. Mission to the EU, as well as a day trip to The College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.

The study trip allowed our Wisconsin teachers to develop their understanding of the European Union, its institutions, and the current issues facing the Member States, and to bring fresh information back to their World History and AP Modern European History classes.

As William Gibson commented, “my visit to Brussels made me rethink the way I teach European history – I decided to start this year’s class by discussing the remarkable successes as well as the challenges faced by the European Union, before going into the history of conflict and division that has marked so much of modern European history – in the context of the world wars and the divisions of the Cold War, the European Union stands to show how far Europe has come”.
